Torrs Hydro New Mills Limited was established for the specific purpose of owning the Torrs Hydro Electric scheme by Torr Weir on the River Goyt in New Mills in the High Peak of Derbyshire. A share of the revenue from the scheme will help Torrs Hydro achieve it's aim to help regenerate the community and to promote the environmental sustainability of the New Mills area. We have a lease from New Mills Town Council, planning permission and an abstraction license from the Environment Agency and the building work has now started.

Torrs Hydro New Mills Limited have their own website which they are redesigning but please visit them at www.torrshydro.co.uk

for daily updates we highly recommend you visit their blog and get yourself on their email news list

Directions to Archie

Local people all know where to go, but now we are seeing people from all over coming to see us, here are some directions.
The Torrs Riverside Park where Archie our Archimedean screw lives is under the town so it's not obvious.

By Rail
New Mills has two stations, New Mills Newtown and New Mills Central. New Mills Central is on the Manchester/Sheffield line and is the closest. From New Mills Central station go down the hill walking on the road. At the bottom of the hill when you can see the river on your left turn left and double back onto the footpath. This path will take you over the Millennium Walkway, which is a fantastic site in its own right. Following the path, with the river on your right, under the tall arched bridge (Union Road Bridge) and Archie (the hydro scheme) is in front of you set in the ruins of the Torr Mill.
From New Mills Newtown, walk down the hill (Albion Road). Pass the Swizzles factory that makes all those lovely sticky sweets. At the traffic lights turn left going up a hill (Union Road). The scheme can be seen from the Union Road bridge so you might like to cross the road (to the right as you go up the hill) and look over the bridge. To get to Archie, stay on the left side of the road and turn left into Hurst Lee Road (passed the police station) walk to the end (goes from a track to a path). You'll have a pub and Rock Garage in front of you. Turn right and double back down the track and you'll soon find Archie.

By Bus
Get off at New Mills Bus Station (on the mini roundabout). Behind the bus station (away from the roundabout) is the Heritage Centre (on your left). You must go into it, either now or before you leave. Follow the path down the hill. The steps are sloped and many in number, but they are worst coming up. At the bottom of the steps turn left, under the Union Road Bridge and you'll see Archie.

By Car
If you arrive on the A6, there is one set of traffic lights that are sign posted "New Mills". Turn down them (Albion Road). go down the hill to the traffic lights. Left left (Union Road). Up the hill (you cross Union Road Bridge) to a mini roundabout. The New Mills Bus Station is off this roundabout and the Heritage Centre is behind it. Turn right at the mini-roundabout (Market Street) and immediate right (Rock Street). Torr Top car park is in front of you. From the Torr Top car park is a cobbled track down towards the river (on the left if you are looking at the road). Go down this track and then turn right to follow the River Sett. You'll find Archie!
If you coming from Hayfield you'll need to turn right at the lights (just after the Cooperative Food store on the left). If you are coming from Marple, you arrive at the mini roundabout with the bus station on your right.

If you have read all of these directions you'll see that there are many ways to Archie
