The Town Council is responsible for all parks and open spaces in New Mills, including the Torrs Riverside Park, Town Hall and the Heritage and Information Centre
The Town Hall houses the Town Council offices, Council Chamber and the top floor houses the largest public hall in the town which is fully accesssible from a level entrance to the rear of the building.

New Mills Town Council has 12 member Councillors, who are elected every 4 years in the wards of Ollersett, Whitle and Thornsett.
Following the elections in May 2007 there are 8 Liberal Democrat, 3 Conservative and 1 Independent Town Councillors.
Four of the Town Councillors are also on High Peak Borough Council. The Councillors are also Trustees of the Town Public Hall.

Chantell Hannell (above) is Chair of the Town Council and the Liberal Democrat Councillor - Whitle Ward.
Full meetings of the Town Council are held around every six weeks, with a meeting of either the Leisure and Parks Committee or the Welfare and Administration Committee in between.
These meetings are generally on Mondays from 7.30pm in the Council Chamber. The public may attend, but not participate without prior consent.
The Annual Meeting of the Town Council must be held in May.
Distinct from this is the Annual Town Meeting at which any registered elector may speak and vote.
