The Town of New Mills has an appealing balance of the rural and urban, historic and modern.
New Mills is a unique and interesting town built on hillsides at the foot of the Pennines, above a dramatic gorge where the rivers Sett and Goyt join in the Torrs Riverside Park. The Sett descends from nearby high Kinder moorland at the heart of the Peak District National Park. The Goyt curves through tranquil meadows on either side of the town, connected by the Torrs and a spectacular aerial walkway.
Many old mill-town stone buildings characterise the centre of New Mills. However, the heritage of multiple rail and road links to Stockport and Manchester have also attracted modern residential developments, such that the population is around 10,000.
A very significant attraction of New Mills is its balance of the rural and urban, being set in scenic greenbelt landscape while having proximity to shops, services and employment in neighbouring towns of Stockport, Hyde, Glossop, Buxton and Macclesfield.
However, the town itself has its own distinctive appeal. Part of this derives from the past - the ancient geology that has bestowed the deep gorge within the town centre and the heritage of industrialisation over many centuries.
This has been capitalised upon in recent decades with the creation of the Torrs Riverside Park, Sett Valley Trail, Waterside and Goytside Meadows reserves, Millennium Walkway and Heritage Centre,
Through the Town Council, New Mills has been able to establish and maintain an enviable asset of public parks throughout the town, which provide recreational spaces for walking, sports, play, events and general enjoyment.
In the built-up central parts a conservation area has been established to protect and regenerate the quality of the buildings and public spaces. Further regeneration is looked for in the future through the New Mills Town Partnership.
